These caves have historical ties to the muslim people of africa who inhabited the region and served as strategic dwellings, facilitating connections to Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar. Made primarily of limestone and sandstone, these caves provided natural shelter in the arid climate. Today, many are repurposed for tourism or residential use.One fascinating aspect of the Cuevas in the Andalusian coast is their adaptability to environmental challenges. Over centuries, inhabitants ingeniously transformed these caves into multi-functional spaces, serving not only as homes but also as storage facilities for crops and goods, and even as livestock shelters. This resourcefulness highlights the deep connection between human ingenuity and the natural landscape, making the Cuevas not just architectural marvels, but also testaments to the resilience of the communities that called them home.

CUEVA, is a collaboration by Julia Flux and Hamish Logan exploring haunted landscapes and our sensual connection with our environment. Its a quest for origin. And the origin of movement. CUEVA moves beyond observation to engage in a deeper tactile dialogue. Guided by the conceptional thinking of vibrant Matter by Jane Bennett, CUEVA looks into the interplay of presence and absence in landscapes, collaborating with elements like wind, light and earths. Caustic light, darkness, shaping patterns in dust which are changing with every momvement. CUEVA is a approach to a contemporary spirituality aiming to come from plain retelling into mythmaking. Creation with meaning, without waste, a collaboration with nature and deep listening to our environment, past, precense and futures.
